Doesn't rain unless it pours
Jun. 18th, 2022 07:12 pmThis week:
- A record-breaking heatwave hits the city.
- My partner picks up COVID from work, recovers, then leaves for a trip Wednesday-Sunday night.
- I come down with COVID Wednesday night. I initially think it's allergies + my period starting. Turns out it gets worse. And my period does also start.
- An old friend checks in on me and we text for a while to catch up. Turns out we're both hoping to start hatching/raising kids within the coming year. She's starting ASAP, I'm waiting on a pre-baby bucket list international trip per my partner's request-- though it seems like it'd be hard to fit into the budget.
- By Thursday afternoon, it's very clear that the AC is broken.
- Because of the record-breaking heatwave, HVAC repair places across the city are booked solid for days. We get an appointment for Saturday. "We" meaning me, because it's just me and the cats while I'm contagious and isolating. But at least it's the company that installed it & we're still under a parts warranty.
- Friday happened? IDK. It must have. I no longer have a fever at this point, but don't recall much about the day besides hoping that the AC tech would come EARLY Saturday morning. Indoor temps get up to 96 degrees.
- Accidentally close the younger cat in the bathroom in the middle of the night & wake up to find my favorite sports bra soaked in cat pee. Sorry, Noodle, but really?
- Running fans in the windows overnight bring the house down to 90 by morning.
- I feel better, albeit hot and uncomfortable, and get some cleaning done while waiting for the AC tech. They finally show up around 4.
- 1.5 hours and a $90 service charge later, I'm left with a $2.6k estimate (under warranty) that my dad's retired HVAC buddy says is at least $1k over something reasonable, assuming the issue isn't fabricated (as the first person I contact as an alternative suggests). I'm left to find other estimates, knowing that the repair will entail ordering & waiting on a part + about 8 hours worth of labor.
- Good bye, international travel bucket-list budget.
- Time to mull over whether or not that means delaying kiddos another few months? year??
- Also-- debating if it'd be more stressful for my old cat to sit in the hot house melted like his bones are made of coconut oil or more stressful to dunk him in the tub to cool him down, known that he hates baths enough that the last one inspired him to grok the use of doorknobs in pursuit of freedom.
- Oh yeah, I was supposed to 1. finish my conference poster, 2. buy clothes for my conference, and 3. prep for networking at the conference. I need to print my poster by mid-day Monday and I leave first thing Wednesday AM. This is the first professional conference I'll be able to attend since before COVID, so of course I should get COVID and have a critical home system fail the week before.
